Tips To Protect your RV windshield from breaking

1 MIN READ | JUNE 7, 2021

Unlike the average car, RV windshields are more of a target for kicked-up rocks on the road and other debris simply because of their larger size. If you’ve ever had a complete RV windshield replacement, you know that it’s not a cheap service. While there is no guarantee that your RV’s windshield will never get damaged, there are certain steps you can take to reduce the risk of an RV windshield repair or replacement. Here are some of our top tips to protect your RV windshield from breaking.

Repair small damage immediately

Small chips and cracks can spread quickly, and what would have been a quick fix may become a more costly replacement. RV windshields have a specialized film between two layers of laminated glass. This film is what helps prevent the glass from shattering during a collision. Suppose a chip or crack penetrates deep enough into this layer. In that case, the overall structural integrity of the windshield is compromised, and any water that gets in can result in glass clouding. Regardless of how minor the damage may be, you must schedule an RV windshield repair as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Keep your windshield clean

The bugs, pollen, dirt, and other particles that end up on your RV after a road trip should always be removed as soon as possible. This is because the wiper blades can pick up the debris and drag them across the windshield, resulting in scratching or pitting on the glass, which brings us to our next tip…

Replace wiper blades regularly

We recommend switching out your wiper blades every two years. Wear and tear on the wiper blades can also cause scratches on your RV’s windshield, which we want to prevent as much as possible.

Avoid using your RV in early spring

As excited as RV owners are to get their vehicle out and enjoy the warmer weather, we recommend waiting until the roadways are cleaned. As the snow melts, the sand, salt, and small stones are left behind, which increases the risk of rock chips and cracks. In Calgary, RV owners must be extra cautious about driving through the mountains when the snow has just melted, and road debris is present.

Keep your RV stored during hail storms

One of the most common reasons for RV windshield replacement in Calgary is damage after a hail storm. To avoid this from happening to your vehicle, pay attention to the weather forecast and keep your RV covered or in storage during hailstorms.
